God, What's My Purpose and Spiritual Gift

God, what’s my purpose and spiritual gift? What am I called to do?

This is a question that lots of believers wonder.

“Jesus came and told his disciples,’I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:18-20

The answer is right there, as believers we are called to go and make disciples of all nations and teach them how to live for Christ.

What are Spiritual Gifts?

Although our purpose is the same, the ‘how’ looks differently for everyone. 1 Corinthians 12 talks about spiritual gifts and the body of Christ. Your spiritual gifts, which is your how, were assigned before you were even born. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5. Your spiritual gift was planted before you were even a seed. God created you to harvest purpose by using your spiritual gift.

Spiritual gifts are your talents given by God with the purpose of promoting Christ. There are so many spiritual gifts and each gift serves a different purpose. No gift is better than another, they all work together to make up the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 says “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve the same Lord, and we can each do different things. Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do. The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others.”

Just like the human body, all gifts are parts that have different functions, but they work together to make up the body of Christ. The eye can see and the nose can smell, they work differently but their purpose is vital to the health of the body. While one person may be called to preach to thousands behind a pulpit, someone else may be called to work at a low paying job with nonbelievers just to be the light in the midst of darkness. If you ever feel discouraged because your role in the body seems insignificant compared to someone else, I am here to tell you that your job is important! Both roles are important because they will ultimately lead people to Christ which is our purpose. “God put our bodies together in such a way that even the parts that seem the least important are valuable. He did this to make all parts of the body work together smoothly, with each part caring about the others.” 1 Corinthians 12: 24-25

What is my spiritual gift?

I can’t give you a special formula on uncovering your spiritual gift because there isn’t one. I encourage you to continuously pray for revelation and be obedient as the Holy Spirit leads you. Another way to help you find your spiritual gift is to identify your given talents. What are you good at? Has the Holy Spirit been pushing you to pray for people or has He been giving you revelations to share with others? A lot of the time we are already using our spiritual gift(s) without even realizing it.

If you don’t have any idea of what your spiritual gift is, just be obedient as the Holy Spirit instructs you. By being obedient to Christ you are walking in your purpose. Continue to express God’s love to others through your action and words. God has given us all instruction on how to live a life pleasing to him and love trumps them all. In fact the bible tells us that you can have all these special gifts but if you don’t have love you have nothing! 1 Corinthians 13.

Don’t get so caught up in discovering your spiritual gifts that you miss opportunities to be the love of Jesus personified. God will reveal your spiritual gift in due time. Continue to follow, love like and obey Christ, He will never stray you away from your purpose.

Prayer: Dear God, You are the God of creation, no detail is too small for you. Thank you for creating me and seeing me fit to be apart of your greater purpose. You gifted me before I was even an idea to my parents and I know you will present me with my gift at the right time. For it is your time that I operate on and not my own. Please reveal to me how you need to me to use my purpose of making disciples. Give me the strength to use this purpose and fill me up with your heavenly presence so that I may go out into the world and do ALL of what you have called me up. Fill me up so that there is no room for fear inside of me Jesus. Thank you Holy Spirit for guiding me in the direction that I should go, I pray that I open my eyes and ears so that I can follow you. I surrender my life to you my glorious God and I allow you to do your work within me. Amen.

I pray that this post encouraged you to walk out in your purpose and/ or help you identify your spiritual gift. If your spiritual gift has been revealed to you, in what ways have you been using it to promote the Kingdom?
