Have you ever gotten dressed to go out with friends, you take a look in the mirror before you leave and say “I look BOMB”? Your confidence is at an all time high because you hair is laid, makeup is flawless, and your new fit is everything. Nothing can ruin this night, you are the most beautiful woman in the world. You’re feeling good all the way to the event and then boom you walk in and you see all these other equally beautiful people around you and the confidence you once had starts to dwindle. And then these thoughts of not being good enough starts to cloud your mind. Have you ever been through that? Or maybe if you haven’t been through that specific scenario, have you ever been flooded with unwanted, negative thoughts that have caused you to become insecure? If so, keep reading and let’s work together on how to use scripture to fight negative thoughts.

I’ve spent a great portion of my life dealing with mind attacks telling me inferior lies about myself. And for a while I believed those lies which led me to do unthinkable things to measure up to the person I unknowingly already was.

Anything that speaks against God’s word is not from God.

Those lies coming for your mind, dignity and life aren’t from God. They are a ploy from the enemy with the hopes to make you believe your’re something you’re not. You see, the last thing the enemy wants is for you to walk in your true identity. Because he knows that once you embrace your God-given identity, you are unstoppable.

Ephesians 6:10-18 teaches us about the armor of God which is the mandatory gear for Christians to wear in order to win this spiritual warfare. In the 17th verse, we learn about the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. I love that! The bible is the only part of the armor of God that actually fights back. The key to beating those internal, ungodly thoughts is through scripture.

The Bible is equipped with powerful ammo to not only fight but beat every scenario. When those thoughts appear, fight back with God’s word. Speak the truth to the lies you’re being told.

This is a spiritual warfare and although we are on the winning side, the fight isn’t always a quick knockout. Sometimes you have to stay in that ring for several rounds until you come out on top. With every round, continue to fight back with the trueness of God’s word. Repeat passages that speak against what you are being told. If you are being told that you are not beautiful, recite scriptures that tell you are made in the image of Christ and that you are of a royal priesthood. If you feel threatened scream to the mountain tops that “no weapon formed against you will prosper.” The more you speak God’s word the more afraid  the enemy becomes. In my opinion, the most feared human is the one who knows and applies the word of God in everyday life. #wisdom

This is one of many reasons why it’s important for Christians to be well-versed in scripture through regular study. Yes, it would be amazing if we could all quote scripture off the bat. I mean those are actual goals. But you don’t need to have all of the Old Testament memorized in order to fight negative thoughts. When you study the Bible and understand what He is saying to you, God will provide you with the right ammo to fight negative thoughts at the right time.

On August 5, 2017 I was sitting in the lobby of this hospital waiting to hear news about my mom. All I knew at that point was that she’s was very sick. Eventually, the doctor told my family that my mom had a massive heart attack and was in a medically induced coma. Instantly fear and sadness washed over me but then I heard the voice of God say everything would work out.

Okay, even though I believed that she was okay, I struggled y’all! That was my mom frozen and in this coma. By sight things were not looking good and I was freaking out. I tried to stand on God’s truth but it was hard in the midst of the chaos that was happening around me and even in me. The moment I prayed to God to help me get through this, passages I’ve previously studied came to mind. Although I did not know them word for word, I was able to reference it and pull/ up the passages to fight back. I fought like I’ve never fought before. At first those negative thoughts that she was going to die kept coming back and I kept fighting back with God’s word. I rested on Psalms 118. Ultimately those negative thoughts were defeated. I started walking in the truth of God’s promise that she’d be okay and eventually mommy woke up. Had I fallen victim to the lies of the enemy that my mom wouldn’t wake up, I could have lost hope and pulled the plug. I wrote about her heart attack and coma in a previous post. If you are interested in hearing that testimony, click here.

God’s word is filled with the truth of who we are, who He is and His power. Consistently meditate on His word and use His power to fight negative thoughts. The power of God is stronger than ANYTHING and when you use His weapon to fight back those negative thoughts, you will win!  Although  Rest on Him, He will get your mind right!

Agreed! Allowing God’s power and love to govern rather than the world and earth would literally be heaven on earth. Thank you so much!

When I was a kid, my mom used to pay us to learn whole chapters of scripture. I made $10 memorizing all of Psalm 91. It’s proven priceless to me on so many occasions though.

Yes, isn’t studying God’s word like riding a bike. Once you learn, it is forever embedded in you. And it always pops back up at the right time!

Fantastic post! I need scripture all the time and unfortunately haven’t done my best at memorizing some. This post reminds me of a book I am currently reading called, Why Her? it is so important we learn to channel the negative thoughts away and hold onto God’s truth. Thank you for your post.

The beautiful thing about grace is that we aren’t condemned for where we are. We can always choose to walk right back into alignment and He’ll be waiting for us with open arms. I have to check out the book, who is it by?

Yes and amen!! The Word of the Lord is our weapon. The fight of this world is not carnal but mighty to the pulling down of strongholds. Those thoughts referenced above can become strongholds if we listen to them and allow them to take root in our heart, mind and soul. I love your statement about God’s Word. Only what the Lord says about us matters. This is reminiscent of an old gospel song with the lyrics, “Whose report will you believe? I will believe the report of the Lord.” 🙂

Thank you so much for this post. My grandfather passed this morning, and although it was expected, it’s affected me more than I thought it would. I’ve been pushing God aside in favor of my negative thoughts and emotions when I know I need His guidance now more than ever.

Hi love! I am truly sorry about your grandfather. I know how hard that can be. Yes, it is absolutely important to feed out the negative thoughts but also remember to lean on God. When my mom was in a coma, I was in a battle with negative thoughts and kept fighting them off with God’s word. He led me to a passage that said when you are afraid lean on Me. And I think that is a beautiful reminder that it is okay to be sad or afraid but to lean on God because He will lead you to peace. Praying for peace for you and your family sis. XO
